For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Amy Valentine. I have been Ward 5 Councilor for 4 years. I live at 6 Stetson Avenue with my husband, Richard our daughter, Rebecca and our 2 dogs Poco and Zoey. I have lived and worked in Plattsburgh for 30 years,
And attended Plattsburgh State University and Clinton Community College, receiving my B.A. in anthropology and my RN in Nursing. I’m a Registered Nurse and am currently the Director of the Transitions Program for Hospice of the North Country.
In 1996, I took a reprieve from nursing and opened a Toy Store in downtown Plattsburgh on Bridge Street. I soon became involved in the Plattsburgh Downtown Association. My work with the PDA, running my own small business, and having a child in the city schools inspired me to engage in the work of enhancing and protecting our quality of life by running for City Council.
I have with great pride accomplished some of what I set out to do, and I would greatly appreciate your support to continue making the Plattsburgh community the kind of place that we and our children can all be proud to call home. A number of my contributions as member of the Plattsburgh City Council include:
- The establishment of regular Ward 5 Forums
- The inauguration of a yearly citizen’s City-Wide Clean-up Day.
- Working aggressively to protect and keep our Farmers Market at its present location.
- The establishment of Diversity Enlightenment Training for all Department Heads and City Councilors in conjunction with Plattsburgh State’s Center for Diversity
- Facilitating a more effective working relationship with our Little League Association.
- Working to have a dog park built in Melissa Penfield Park.
- Working to protect the continued success of small businesses in our city.
- Working with residents to establish weight limits on Cumberland Avenue.
- Working to keep Plattsburgh affordable while retaining our essential services.
- Being responsive to the individual needs of Ward 5 residents and resolving many quality of life issues (e.g. having tree stumps removed, sidewalks repaired, street lighting adjusted, noise issues addressed, potholes filled, streets repaired and pedestrian crossing signs erected).
- Working with the Plattsburgh City Police Department to establish a dangerous dog ordinance.
- Establishing a working committee to research and address sidewalk snow removal issues for our city.
With your support, my priorities over the next three years include:
- Establishing a policy and procedure that world require all Palttsburgh City Department Heads to have annual job performance evaluations/appraisals
- Working towards establishment of an Ethics Committee
- Continuing to investigate all possible means by which we can share resources with the Town, County and local School Districts.
- Restoring the Youth Center Committee to complete this vital project.
- Working constructively with our Bargaining Units to reduce and contain costs
- Promoting prudent economic development
Again, with your continued support, I think we can make Plattsburgh a nationally recognized and admired American small city.
